Washington Post Editorial Board Endorses Trump Wall Funding In Exchange For DREAMer Citizenship

The left-wing Washington Post Editorial Board endorsed “a deal for the Dreamers,” in exchange for the Trump Wall. President Trump and congressional Republicans want $33 billion in border-security measures, including the $18 billion Trump Wall. Democrats want a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants born in America, also known as “Dreamers.”

They wrote:

“Some Republicans are angling for more than half a loaf. Using the dreamers as hostages, they want to decimate legal immigration, slash family reunification visas and dissolve the lottery system that provides visas for people from Africa and other regions that generate relatively few immigrants.

Those measures would inflict real harm on real people. By contrast, spending billions on border security, while profligate, has enjoyed bipartisan support in the past. In 2006, many prominent Democrats, including then-Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, voted for 700 miles of fencing at the southwest frontier, albeit at a time when illegal crossings were more than three times greater than they are today.”

Democrats benefit from this deal from a purely political standpoint. That’s because the overwhelming majority of illegal immigrants who get citizenship, and the right to vote, will likely vote Democrat. In the 2016 presidential election, 66 percent of Latinos nationwide voted for Hillary Clinton, compared to 28 percent who voted for Donald Trump, according to the exit polls. In addition to that, ex-illegal immigrants will likely be an even more reliably Democratic voting bloc.

Republicans would benefit politically because conservatives argue that it would stop, or significantly reduce the flow of illegal immigrants into America. It would also fulfill one of President Trump’s biggest campaign promises: a border wall and border security.
