Tuesday afternoon, vegan activist Nasim Najafi Aghdam began shooting YouTube employees at the company headquarters in San Bruno, California. She wounded three before turning her handgun on herself. Aghdam’s father told authorities that she was angry at YouTube, and It is currently believed that the shooting was in retaliation for their demonetizing of her videos.
As law enforcement officers arrived on the scene, they saw employees fleeing the premises. According to The New York Times, many of the employees had initially believed the incident was a fire drill. However, they fled when it became apparent that there was an active shooter.
Zach Vorhies, a senior software engineer, told The Times that he was sitting at his desk when the alarm sounded. As he fled, he saw a person lying outside. “He had a red spot on his stomach, and he was lying on his back, not moving,” Vorhies told The Times. “I saw the blood soak through the shirt.”
Vorhies also stated that he saw a heavyset man shouting “Come at me!” to the shooter. It’s possible that this man was taunting the attacker.
Law enforcement officers found a woman – later identified as Nasim Najafi Aghdam – dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The police have stated that they have not “ruled out the possibility of a second shooter,” but that there was “no information to suggest that there’s somebody else in there.”
Three people were rushed to the hospital to receive treatment. One was in critical condition, another was in serious condition, and the last was in fair condition.
Aghdam was furious with YouTube because they had stopped paying for her videos. She ran the website NasimeSabz.com – Persian for “Green Breeze” – and posted about Persian culture, veganism, animal rights, and, of course, heavily criticized YouTube.
Could this shooting have been prevented? Will this incident provide a case for more gun control? We will find out soon enough.
