The National Republican Senatorial Committee debuted an attack ad on Monday, targeting Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-AZ) after recent polling suggested the latter posed more of a threat to the Republican candidate in 2024.
The 30-second ad blasted “rotten Ruben Gallego,” who it said “abandoned his wife when she was nearly nine months pregnant, then married a D.C. lobbyist.”
Such an attack could be risky for the committee, as Gallego is a former U.S. Marine and a veteran of the Iraq War and has blamed the end of his first marriage on mental struggles following his deployment. Politico reported he and his ex-wife Kate Gallego are now “good friends,” according to a person close to the congressman. He has also been pictured with his 6-year-old son in Congress and on the campaign trail as recently as last month.
