Did the mother of Brian Laundrie, the suspected killer of Gabby Petito, offer to assist her son in covering up the crime?
That’s what Petito’s family is alleging. In a Dec. 5 letter that became public record on Dec. 20, the lawyer for the Petito family said Laundrie’s mother offered to lend him a shovel after Petito was killed, Fox News reported.
Petito family attorney Pat Reilly, in the letter to Laundrie family lawyer Matt Luka, detailed what documents the parents of Brian Laundrie must hand over in a civil suit against them.
“This request certainly would also include the note that Roberta Laundrie wrote to Brian Laundrie, [in] which she offered to bring a shovel to help bury the body,” Reilly wrote.
“The note was released to the custody of Mr. [Steven] Bertolino on Friday, June 24, 2022 by the FBI.”

House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy’s quest to become speaker of the House has run into new headwinds as the lower chamber of Congress prepares for a leadership vote on Tuesday.
Republicans gained control of the 435-member House in the November elections, with 222 seats. To be elected speaker over Rep. Andy Biggs of Arizona — the only other Republican who has publicly said he wants the post — McCarthy needs 218 votes. That means any more than four Republicans opposing him, assuming all Democrats do, could sink his chances for the post.
On Sunday, nine Republicans signed a letter saying that McCarthy’s efforts to woo conservative Republicans have been, in essence, too little, too late.
“[T]he times call for radical departure from the status quo — not a continuation of past, and ongoing, Republican failures,” the letter said.

House staffers can expect a hefty pay increase in 2023 — courtesy of outgoing Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives would raise its maximum annual salary for staffers to $212,000 in a Friday “Dear Colleague” letter to fellow lawmakers.
Pelosi previously established a new minimum annual salary of $45,000 for congressional staffers, a policy she touted in the letter announcing the maximum salary increase.
The outgoing speaker pointed to the House’s need to “retain and recruit the best talent in our nation.”
The maximum pay is considerably more than the salary of most elected House members and senators, which is set at $174,000 a year.

Authorities believe they finally have the man responsible for the brutal murder of four Idaho college students, Byran Kohberger, 28, in custody.
For the first time since Kohberger’s apprehension, the father of one of the victims, Steve Goncalves, has chosen to speak out.
Goncalves’s daughter, Kaylee, was one of the four victims. The others were her roommates, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle and Kernodle’s boyfriend, Ethan Chapin.
In November, the four were reportedly murdered in their sleep by someone carrying some sort of blade.
“The little coward that had finally got caught running,” Goncalves said, according to ABC News.
“I still think everyone’s innocent until proven guilty, so I put that in the back of my mind.”
When shown a picture of Kohberger in custody, Goncalves called the suspected murderer a “broken soul, pitiful human being.”
Goncalves is already looking forward to seeing Kohberger in court.
