President Joe Biden signed a funding package overnight on Thursday, keeping the government open through the new year.
The laddered continuing resolution, the first major legislative win for new House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), will fund military construction, veterans affairs, transportation, housing, energy, and other agencies through Jan. 19, with the remainder seeing their funding run out two weeks later.
The president had until recently not indicated whether he would sign the bill into law, telling reporters at the White House on Monday, “Let’s see what’s in it.”
Though the bill does not meet Biden’s funding requests for Ukraine and Israel aid, not to mention additional funding for the southern border and security assistance for Taiwan, it did keep government funding for the immediate future at current levels, without any cuts or policy riders Democrats would find objectionable.
